Can I Cook For My Cat?

Rebecca Schmidt • Aug 07, 2014
For us humans, there is nothing better than a home-cooked meal. If made the cat eatingproper way, it can be the same for cats. Cooking your cat’s meals may sound like a hassle, but it is relatively simple and could be a much better fit for you and your cats.

With a proper diet and healthy lifestyle, a cat can live to be anywhere from 10-23 years old. Making your cat’s food can help give them the missing supplements they need, and possibly increase their health and life span. Canned and dry cat foods contain many additional ingredients that aren’t necessarily good for your cat. “If you decide that you don’t want to make your cat’s food, please feed canned food and keep the dry food out of your cat’s bowl. Dry food is simply not a very healthy or completely safe diet to be feeding to any cat.”- Lisa A. Pierson, DVM. Although it may seem like a walk in the park, it is very important to do plenty of research before starting your cat on homemade meals. Talk to your vet about their opinion on home-cooked meals for your cat. Another person to talk to is a veterinary nutritionist. (Yes, there is such a thing!) There are many dangers if you are not feeding your cat the correct nutrients, so it is important to have a professional help you.

The key to making cat food is balance. If you do not have a balanced diet for your cat, you are better off buying food out of a can. Again, talk to a nutritionist about the correct ratios for what your cat needs.

When you go to the grocery store, the fresh products always cost more money. Some people assume that fresh cat food must be more expensive. As a matter of fact, once the proper math is done, the cost of a 3 ounce can of homemade cat food amounts to less than the 3 ounce cans you buy in the store. Not to mention the homemade food is fresher!
