Does My Cat Need A Bigger Litter Box?

Rebecca Schmidt • Mar 23, 2015
Litter box size is very important! The rule is to have 1 litter box per cat and then 1 extra. One size does not fit all. You want to make sure that your cat has enough room to do his or her business, move around to cover it up, and not spill litter out of the box.

Two important things to consider when buying a litter box are the height of the sides of the litter box and the width of the litter box. The height of the litter box is important so that your cat can easily get in and out of the box. 4 – 6 inches is the perfect height for the average cat. Length and width need to be large enough so that your cat has enough room to move around without getting his or her paws dirty. Length should be at least 1 to 1½ times your cats length and at least 1 length of your cat in width.

Older cats, obese cats, and cats with arthritis may need something a little bit lower so that they can get in and out easier.

One suggestion may be to take a large storage container and cut a hole on the side large enough for your cat to get in and out of. Make sure the height of the hole is not too low so that litter can spill out but is also at a height that works for your cats needs.

When in doubt, always remember that no litter box can be too large.
