Halloween Dangers for Cats

Rebecca Schmidt • Sep 19, 2012
It’s that time of the year again, costumes, pumpkins and trick-or-treaters. Fall is in the air and Halloween is back. This list of potential Halloween dangers will help you protect your kitty.

1) Chocolate

Chocolate contains Theobromine. This can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. Dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk and white chocolate but they should all be avoided.

2) Raisins

Some have chosen to send trick-or-treaters a “healthier” alternative to chocolate in the form of raisins. Although they are better for people, not so much for our pets. The toxic substance within raisins is unknown. However, ingestion of raisins by your cat can result in kidney failure. The effects may be more pronounced in elderly and sick animals.

3) Candy Wrappers

Any type of wrapper can potentially cause an obstruction when ingested. Keep candy and wrappers in a place your cat cannot access.

4) Glow Sticks

Most glow sticks contents are non-toxic. The liquid can however cause irritation to the mouth, vomiting and diarrhea. Many cats like the texture of glow-sticks and chew on them.

5) Candles

Black and orange candles around the home are sure fun in October. Many of us also use candles to give a nice glow to our pumpkins. Just keep an eye on the candles and your kitty. Many tails have twitched into the flames over the years – ouch! Not to mention candles being knocked over and starting fires.

6) Trick-Or-Treaters

When we open our doors to give out treats our kitties may find an easy escape route. The best idea is to confine your cat to a bedroom or the downstairs so they will not get outside. In case they do run out, think ahead and have your veterinarian implant a microchip for identification. ID tags on a break-away collar are also a good idea.

7) Mean People

If you do have a kitty that goes outside, keep them in on Halloween. Sadly all cats are in danger of being abused at this time of year. If your cat is black or tortoise-shelled in color (orange and black) they are in the most danger.

Be safe and have fun this Halloween!
