Holiday Hazards For Cats

1) Fatty Foods :

Foods that your cat does not usually eat can cause gastrointestinal upset. Some foods like chocolate are toxic to the cat. Avoid feeding your cat table scraps. If they must have a bite of turkey, choose a small piece of white meat without skin and place in their bowl. Keep the rest of the holiday food out of your cat’s reach.

2) Holiday Plants :

Mistletoe, Holly, Poinsettia, and Lillies are all toxic or may cause your cat gastrointestinal upset. Avoid bringing these holiday plants into your home.

3) Candles :

Cats may think a flickering flame is fun to swat at. A misplaced paw or tail can knock a candle over. Your cat (ouch!) or home may catch on fire so be very careful.

4) Tinsel and Ribbon :

This is perhaps one of the greatest dangers to cats at this time of year. Both tinsel and ribbon are fun to play with and chew on. If your cat ingests either of these, it could be deadly. The tinsel and ribbon can get caught in the stomach or intestine. The intestine continues to try and pull the foreign object through. The tinsel or ribbon can then cut through the intestine causing great pain, infection and death.

5) The Christmas Tree :

Cats just love Christmas trees. Especially if they come from the outdoors. Any new object, especially one that smells interesting and can be climbed is a favorite of most cats. Make sure your tree is well anchored to the floor or wall. Keep all breakable ornaments higher on the tree away from your cat’s reach. Cats will also try to drink the water from the stand so make sure to cover the base and use only fresh water with no chemicals or fertilizers.

6) String Lights and Cords :

Some cats like to chew on new items in the home. Chewing on extension cords and lights can cause a fire in the home and harm to your cat. Keep an eye out for frayed or chewed wires. Cord protectors can be purchased at the hardware store and make sure lights are tied up and off the floor.

7) People Coming and Going:

Many of us have guests this time of the year. Every time someone enters and leaves your home, your cat can escape. Tell your guests to be mindful of this and if many people are coming or going at one time keep your kitty locked in a safe place with access to food, water and a litter box.

Here’s to a safe and happy holiday season for you and your cat!!!
