What Is a Cat’s Normal Heart Rate?

Rebecca Schmidt • Aug 09, 2013
Just like with people, a cat’s heart rate could be an indicator that there is a health problem. It helps to know what the normal heart rate for a cat should be and how to check your cat’s heart rate on your own.

A cat’s normal heart rate is 140 to 220 times a minute and if your cat is very relaxed, he or she may very well be on the lower end of the scale. Because stress does affect your cat’s heart rate, your cat may test high while at the veterinarian’s office or when in an uncomfortable situation.

To take your cat’s heart rate, lay your cat on his or her side – preferably the right side. Place your hand over your kitty’s chest right behind the front leg where you’ll be able to feel the heart pulsate with your fingers.

Using a watch with a second hand or a stopwatch, count the beats during 15 seconds. Multiply that number times four for your cat’s heart rate per minute.

If your cat is stressed or has been very active right before you check your cat’s heart rate, the number could be high. Always check with your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your cat’s heart rate.
