Why Does My Cat Lick Me?

Rebecca Schmidt • Dec 03, 2014
Have you ever been sitting down with your cat on your lap and all of a sudden she starts licking you? Here are some reasons why:

You Taste Good – Cats like the taste of our salty skin. You may also have something tasty on your skin.

Trust – Licking and grooming are a way for cats to show trust and care to their owners. It is a sign that they feel safe and happy with you.

Affection – Some people believe that a cat will lick you because they are kissing you and showing their affection for you.

Respect – Licking and grooming are also signs of respect for you as a leader.

Marking Us – When a cat licks you, they are putting their scent on you to say that you belong to them.

Cleaning You – Cats groom one another in the wild. You are part of their group and they want to keep you clean.

There are really no negative reasons for your cat to groom you. Their tongue can be a bit scratchy but if you can handle it, relax and enjoy the extra attention from your feline friend.
