Why Does My Cat Want To Play When I Want To Sleep?

Rebecca Schmidt • Feb 03, 2015
MYTH: Cats are nocturnal.

FACT: Night time and early morning are natural times for cats to be active and want to play. This is known as crepuscular behavior which means “those that are active primarily during dusk and dawn”.

If it seems as though you and your cat are not on the same schedule, here are some helpful hints:

Play with your cat for 20-30 minutes before bedtime – this helps get rid of energy and they will sleep better.
Feed your cat before bedtime because they sleep better on a full stomach.
Hide toys around the house – this gives them something to hunt for at night.
Hide treats around the house – this gives them something to hunt for and a reward.
If you are home in the day play with your cat instead of letting her sleep the day away.
Be patient, this could take a couple weeks before your cat gets used to his or her new routine.
Alternately you can adjust your schedule to wake up at about 4am when your cat is normally most active!
