Is a Cat or a Dog More Likely to Survive a Snake Bite ?

Sep 15, 2020

Research shows cats are up to twice as likely to survive a snake bite. Snake venom acts much more quickly on clotting agents in canines than in felines. The venom causes dogs and cats to lose their clotting ability and bleed to death over time. This loss of clotting ability happens faster in dogs. In turn, dogs also have less success with anti-venom treatment. Aside from dogs losing their clotting ability faster than cats, dogs are also much more active. This means that even when bitten, dogs are going to move around much more than cats. This allows the venom to spread and affect a dog quicker than a cat. Even though cats are around twice as likely to survive a bite from a venomous snake it is important to get them veterinary treatment as soon as possible.
