Rebecca Schmidt • Dec 01, 2014
Here are some important tips for a safe and joyous holiday season for you and your cat:

Keep cats away from Christmas tree water. It can contain fertilizer and bacteria that could upset your cat’s stomach or cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Make sure ornaments that are hung on lower branches are cat friendly and unbreakable. Use cloth loops instead of wire hooks to hang the ornaments.
Tinsel and ribbon can get lodged in your cat’s digestive tract causing an obstruction and may require surgery to remove.
Use artificial plants in your holiday arrangements. Real plants can cause upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Chewing on electrical cords can cause problems such as electrical shock and burned mouth. Unplug all lights when you are not home and use pet proof extension cords.
Turkey or chicken bones can splinter and damage your cat’s mouth and GI tract.
Holiday foods can be rich and greasy which can upset your cat’s stomach and cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Chocolate should be avoided completely because it can cause illness and even death in cats.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Cats can easily bump into them or knock them over.
