How to Eliminate Litter Box Odors

Cat owners spend millions of dollars a year on products designed to reduce or eliminate litter box odors. Here are some helpful tips:

The ammonia-like smell results from the bacterial breakdown of nitrogen containing components in the urine once it’s exposed to air.

To remove urine smells and stains from carpet, furniture and wood, baking soda and vinegar work well. Enzymatic cleaners can also help.

Scoop urine and solid waste from the litter box twice a day and replenish as needed.

Change the litter completely once every week.

Wash the litter box with a mild detergent once every 2 weeks.

Keep litter box in a well ventilated area.

Clumping litter helps trap and reduce odors.
