Why Do Cats Love Boxes and Bags?

Rebecca Schmidt • Oct 09, 2014
Have you ever heard the saying ‘let the cat out of the bag’? Well, as you well know as a cat owner, that statement could not be any closer to reality. Almost every time a cat sees a bag or box, there is an attraction that reels them into the mysterious package. “Why the attraction?” you may ask. Well, here’s why:

Cats love hiding places because they feel safe from danger. Most of the time a bag or box provides a safe environment to play or possibly sleep. Cats sleep for about 18-20 hours a day, so why not curl up in that new shoe box? Hiding places provide a blanket of security for your cat and can relieve anxiety and fear.

Another reason cats love to hide in boxes or bags is because it is a way to see the world around them. The natural instinct for a cat is to hunt for its food and chase after its prey. Being in a package allows them to see the world around them without others being able to see them. Or so they think.

Boxes are very inexpensive if not free with a recent purchase that has been made. It is a safe and effective way to provide fun and safety for your cats. If you really want to make the box or bag special for your cat, try putting a soft blanket and/or some of their favorite cat nip.

Never punish your cat by putting them in a box or bag. Many people think this is an effective way to punish their cat however it is potentially very dangerous. Aside from the fear of your cat suffocating, the seclusion and safety element the box or bag gives off at the beginning will be lost. Your cat might associate negative feelings towards boxes and bags, and become skittish around them.
