Why Does My Cat Knead Me?

Rebecca Schmidt • Nov 28, 2014
Kneading refers to the rhythmic movement a cat makes by pushing its paws up and down onto a soft surface. Cats usually use their front paws, although some cats will use their back paws as well.

Nursing – Kittens perform a kneading movement on their mothers to increase milk production while nursing.

Safety and Affection – If your cat kneads you, it means that it feels safe with you and that it loves you. Kneading is a sign of affection.

Bedding – Some cat behaviorists say that cats who go outside will knead grass and dirt to make it more comfortable for sleeping. Indoor cats may knead their favorite blanket that they sleep on.

Comfort – Cats will also knead for comfort, it soothes and relaxes them.

If your cat is simply kneading you and appears to be in a state of contentment, sit back and relax and enjoy your cat massage.
